Mold Components Processing Method

Mold Components

What are the Mold Components processing methods?

The processing of various Mold Components by the design drawings is referred to as “Mold Components Processing.” The techniques used to process mold parts can be broadly categorized into two categories: General processing, which includes standard turning, milling, grinding, drilling, etc, and special processing, which includes electrical discharge machining, wire EDM, etc.

The best processing technique should be chosen based on the properties of the items to be processed, manufacturing costs, delivery schedules, precision requirements, etc. Rather than the more advanced equipment. There are typically two types of processing equipment in the workshop of standard mold businesses.

Common Mold Components Processing Machines are as follows

  • Milling machines

Milling machines are generally required in mold components manufacturing because of their vast variety of processing capabilities. It is frequently employed for a variety of surface and groove processing, roughing, and finishing of templates. The four categories of frequently used milling machine tools are drill bits, flying cutters, vertical milling cutters, and boring cutters. According to their forms, vertical milling cutters can be classified as bottom milling cutters, ball-end milling cutters, and R-angle milling cutters. It is impossible to process for some right-angle milling machines on the mold components.

  • Drilling Machine

The drilling machine is a compact, simple-to-use machine for making small holes. The average drilling diameter of a desktop drilling machine is less than 13 mm, with a 16 mm maximum. It is frequently used to process holes with loose tolerances and minimal requirements. Although its accuracy is not particularly great, it has a quick processing time, a straightforward operation, and is very simple to master.

  • Drill press with radial attachments

The drill press has radial attachments. It is frequently used to process the cooling water channel of the mold, the ring hole, etc. Its name comes from the fact that the cross arm may rotate around the column bag.

  • Lathe

In the mold industry, the lathe is the most often used and common processing tool. It can process any type of rotating part. Circular inserts, support heads, positioning rings, and other mold components are frequently processed using it.

  • Huge water grinder

A large water grinder is needed to prepare the molds. Large mold pieces are typically finished with it, including the datum surface of locking blocks, templates, and sliders. The enormous water grinder uses a particular coolant to cool down.

  • Small flat grinder

Similar to large water grinders, small flat grinders are also frequently used mold processing tools that are primarily used to process small mold components.

CNC Machine

CNC Machining

Traditional machining is done by manual operation of ordinary machine tools.

Tools such as calipers measure the accuracy of products, and this common processing method still plays an important role in mold processing sites today. With the rapid development of computer technology, today’s mold processing sites have used computer-controlled machine tools to operate, and CNC machine tools can automatically process products and parts according to the programs pre-programmed by technicians, which is what we call CNC machining. CNC machining includes CNC milling, CNC turning, CNC EDM, etc. However, for mold processing, CNC processing is generally index-controlled milling processing, such as CNC machining center processing, etc.

EDM Machining

EDM here refers to Electrical Discharge Machining. EDM uses pulse discharge between two electrodes immersed in the working fluid to erode conductive materials. EDM is a typical machine room processing method in the mold processing, especially suitable for processing materials and materials that are difficult to cut by ordinary cutting methods. Workpieces with complex shapes.

Electric discharge machining is mainly used for machining molds and mold components with complex shapes of holes and cavities, machining various hard and brittle materials, such as cemented carbide and hardened steel, etc. Machining deep and fine holes, special-shaped holes, deep grooves, narrow slits and cutting slices, etc.

Cable EDM

In order to accomplish pulse spark discharge cutting on the workpiece, a constantly moving thin metal wire (referred to as a wire electrode) is used as an electrode in wire EDM (WEDM), which is also often referred to as WEDM.

Wire cutting is primarily used to process a variety of small, accurate workpieces with arbitrary curves, micro-holes, and narrow slits. Outstanding benefits of wire-cutting machine tools are their low manufacturing cost, high machining precision, fast production cycle, and small machining allowance. They have been frequently employed in the creation and processing of molds. In general, mold workshops require this processing equipment.
